Alice

This is not a goodbye

No goodbyes just the scraping of my heels on the pavement
Little pebbles of memory getting caught in the wake
This is how the girls walk away in old movies and books
Freedom an exclamation point at the end of enslavement

No goodbyes just a set of strong wings blowing dust in your face
Clipped wings grown out as a period at the end of a prison term
Pages turning in the draft revealing the hope of the unwritten
And the scraping of my heels on the pavement filling the space
